Last day before vacation.

It’s a sweet thing, no doubt about it. I always take a week off around my birthday. I get to relax, plot something elaborate for my birthday party, maybe go out of town for a few days. That’s what we’re doing this weekend: going to Madison for a few days out of the heat. Sit around, drink Sprecher’s root beer, eat cheese curds, and generally enjoy the cool weather. Seeing as how it’s been topping 100 degrees here recently, this is perfect timing.

Just a couple of small things to get excited about:

1. My student loan is completely paid off. The albatross has finally fallen from my neck (after a good ten years) and it’s freed up a nice little chunk of change. Now we can start working on the credit card (shudder).
2. We got a good look at the baby during the last ultrasound. It is unmistakably a boy. (Can I get a w00t w00t?)
3. I’m going to be 35 this year. Wow.
4. We finally got all that nasty, pet-stained carpet out of the Professor’s room and laid down vinyl tiles. It looks great, and smells even better. Now if I could only get her to actually sleep in her room…

My sister came to town a couple weeks ago with her son Jack. She and her husband had been trying for years; finally had to go with IVF for this little guy. He’s five months old, and his first shock of baby hair is starting to fall out. It’s really thin on top and thicker on the sides. Some serious comb-over action on this kid. Add in the rather bulbous nose and he looks like a miniature Paul Sorvino. He’s cute, though. It was so strange to hold such a small baby. The Professor was quite taken with him; I think it bodes well for when her little brother comes.

Things are slowly, oh so slowly coming right. I’ve been at this job for almost a year now, our debt profile has improved somewhat, everyone’s healthy and happy, and the house is still standing.

Life is good.
