It’s been a pretty bad week.

We’ve had three major items crap out on us: the dishwasher, the washing machine, and the van. The washing machine is a simple fix; the dishwasher may be just as easy if I can manage to get the thing taken apart. The van had a bad ignition coil, which cost us a cool $300 to repair. Yikes.

My grandmother went into the hospital this weekend. She decided that she could get herself from the patio into the house by herself, and took a tumble over her walker. The paramedics wanted to make sure she hadn’t hurt herself, so off to the hospital she went. (Did I mention that my mother can’t lift Grandma up by herself? Every time Grandma loses her balance, Mom has to call the EMTs to help lift her up.)

Incidentally, I found out that Grandma is one of the 300,000 people that the Governor decided could get by without Medicare. She’s 90 years old, schizophrenic, half-blinded by a stroke, and when the Medicare runs out she won’t even have the money to pay for her medications. And people wonder why I’m a liberal…

My mother has discovered that she has an enlarged heart on top of the diabetes. It’s a congenital condition. It’s what killed her father, and it may kill her if she’s not VERY careful. Of course, her father was overwhelmingly afraid of doctors; he might have lived much longer had he sought treatment. Mom may live a very long time as well. Of course, this means I have to be careful as well.

Say a prayer for the soul of Cassandra Kovack. I only met her a couple of times, but she did not deserve this.

(The police don’t clean up murder scenes afterwards. It’s the responsibility of the deceased’s family and friends to clean up. There are companies that specialize in this kind of cleanup, but if there’s no family and the friends are broke, then it’s up to them. Apparently Cassandra did not go quietly. The three people who cleaned her apartment and rescued her cats will not sleep well for a while.)

May God grant her peace, and comfort to those who mourn for her.
