2004-04-14 - 12:13 p.m. My problem is, I read too many damn blogs. First was the Agonist, during the invasion of Iraq. I relied on Sean-Paul Kelley and the gang for minute-by-minute updates on what was going on. Then I started reading some of the blogs he linked to. The Agonist really doesn’t do much commenting; it’s mostly a list of links to news sites all over the world. They let you make up your own mind. Daily Kos, Billmon, Counterspin, and Tacitus link stories and comment on them. I find interesting pieces of information about chicanery in big business and big government, and it gets me all grumpy-like. I’m addicted, I tell ya. So in the interests of balance and calmness and writing another journal entry, here’s a list of things that make my life sweet. The Professor’s big cheesy grin. My wife, laughing. Really good pizza, and really good beer to go with it. Cherries on a summer afternoon. Rain that comes after several days of crushing heat. Snow. New books by Kinky Friedman and Carl Hiaasen Standup comedy from Robin Williams, Steve Martin, and Bill Cosby. The smell of charcoal and hickory smoke. Traveling on a train. Landing in a city you’ve never been to. Making good music in a choir. J’s hands running through my hair. Carl Sandburg’s poetry. Marx Brothers movies. “What’s Opera, Doc?” Good red wine and rare steak. Sunrise in the desert. Brian May guitar licks. Bjork Gudmundsdottir’s voice. Tom Waits. Wammo singing about his favorite drugs. Hot wings. Lots of ’em. Driving down Highway 94 in October, when the maples are ablaze. Really fresh bread. Good long walks. That bone-deep exhaustion you get from brutal exercise. Climbing into bed on a Friday night, knowing you can sleep late the next couple of days. Time by myself. Bass lines by Flea, Bootsy Collins, and John Entwhistle. Time with my family.
