2004-01-02 - 12:07 p.m. Damn what a couple of weeks it's been. Christmas was the usual hecticness: dinner here, lunch there, breakfast over here, each branch of the family competing for a piece of our time. Luckily, I'd managed to get the entire week off, so the running wasn't quite as bad as I'd feared. It was still pretty bad, though. I won't bore you with a list of all the groovy Christmas gifts we got. Suffice it to say that there will be some interesting times ahead, culinarily speaking. I got one of those nifty butane torches for making crème brulee, and a giant mortar and pestle from Mexico. This should make for some serious guacamole come summertime. Add that to the martini set J got, and all of a sudden it looks like party time. Heck, maybe instead of medieval reenactments, we can do '50s reenactments. Just gotta find a smoking jacket and a fez… But the best Christmas presents didn't come gift-wrapped. The Professor took her first independent steps the evening of the 23rd, and J's little sister Sarah got engaged. Her fiance is a really nice guy, big into movies and music and good books. He's also a vegetarian who's still learning how to cook, so as soon as he can clear an afternoon we're gonna try a few experiments. The Saturday after Christmas J got really sick. Maybe it was food poisoning, maybe it was a flu variant, but she felt like absolute crap. Fortunately, it lasted about 24 hours, and then it was over. At least for her; it apparently has a three day incubation period, so by New Years' Eve I was shakin' and bakin' on the couch. Very quiet New Year's for us. So here we are in the New Year, looking forward to more of the same. Life is good, all around. We're all healthy, not all that wealthy, and a bit wiser than usual. Here we go…
